The 11-day Journey
by Brady Mathis

A sign for this season from the Exodus

In Deuteronomy, Moses reviews the “wilderness years”.  He begins this narrative with a striking and presently-prophetic statement:
Deuteronomy 1:2
It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea. (rough approximation below)

The 11-day Journey

It is striking because we know that the people of Israel were at the doorway of the promises of God - their inheritance!  What a tremendous moment in time, such potential, and they didn’t comprehend the significance of the moment and of their choices.
Deuteronomy 1:19-21
19 “So we departed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the mountains of the Amorites, as the LORD our God had commanded us. Then we came to Kadesh Barnea. 20 And I said to you, ‘You have come to the mountains of the Amorites, which the LORD our God is giving us. 21 Look, the LORD your God has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as the LORD God of your fathers has spoken to you; do not fear or be discouraged.’

Moses led the people out of Egypt southward to Horeb (Mt Sinai) and there delivered God’s law and covenant to the people.  From this place, they started a new life:  freed from bondage in Egypt and supernaturally equipped and motivated to step into destiny.  And then came fear...  What could have been an 11-day journey was prolonged to a 40-year struggle.
Deuteronomy 1:26
“Nevertheless you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the LORD your God;
Deuteronomy 1:40
But as for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.’
Deuteronomy 2:14
14 And the time we took to come from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the Valley of the Zered was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war was consumed from the midst of the camp, just as the LORD had sworn to them.

This statement is also prophetically significant for this time because of the number eleven - as this year is 2011.  An eleven-day walk from the place where the people received the covenant was the threshold of the promise of God.  In this context, the journey of eleven days represents the best possible outcome for our lives in this present time:  following the leading of the Holy Spirit into our inheritance.

This type also represents for us the idea of potential.  We look back on the people of Israel and consider what “could have been” in comparison to what was; we see the potential.  In 2011 we are presented with the same potential to move into our destiny and take possession of our inheritance.  We have control of the outcome just as they did.  We will be confronted by fear and fearful things just as they were.  We will choose to trust in the face of impossible circumstances or we will choose to fear, and by that choice we will then move onward into God’s best or turn and step back into the wilderness.

The Lord says,
Seize this day!  This time is more significant than you have known and your potential is greater than you have imagined.  Trust Me.  Expect a challenge, but expect victory.  Take only the next step as I lead you.  Fear is your enemy and will be your undoing if you let it linger.  By fearing a thing, you create the very thing you fear.  Trust Me!
